Howdy. I sail a Theta ( the one in the photo above) from Port o Call. If you want to see what I've done for my shade cloth, you're welcome to come see me there. Quite simply, I no longer use the mainsail. The boom has been renamed "the shade cover support device". I hade a shade cover cut and sewed and supported it with tent poles. Works like a charm over the boom !

Hi Clive. Where do you sail from? I sail from Port o Call and have designed a nice shadecloth for my Theta. (The one in the picture above). I had the shadecloth made up, sewed etc and braced it with 4 tent poles. It ties up in 4 places and works like a charm. Let me know if you'd like to come see it sometime.

Hi Clive. The boat in the picture belongs to me. I hardly use the mainsail any more as the genoa does all the work. I had a shade cloth designed and made for me, using tent poles to brace it. It goes over the boom and ties up in 4 places. Works like a charm ! Where do you sail from ? Perhaps I could show yo what I've done. I sail from Port o Call, Vaal Dam.

Pisses me off seriously . Mostly my sailing hobby is on a very tight budget. Something like this can set somebody like me back for a long time. I hope they catch the thieving bastard but I will not keep my fingers crossed.

Hi Joe, in this case I don't agree with you. That's what I also thought I believed in general, BUT what if this were your loved ones? Would you still think the same? I felt the pain in the radio interview and ask myself, how can I still take that stance, especially in light of the fact that there are no other plausible solutions !?

That made the decision for me. An easy SMS to make a donation, and I still believe I did the right thing under the circumstances by contributing.

Regards

I will be racing the RTIR again this year as it is always a highlight of the year for me. I think I did my first RTIR in about 1972 in a Spearhead dinghy. If you are a roadrunner, everyone asks if you've done a Comrades (yes), and if you are a cyclist, everyone asks if you've done an Argus (yes) so I guess if you're a sailor you need to have done a RTIR.

It's a very full day of sailing action. I normally leave the mooring at PNYC at dawn to cover the 22km to the start.

The start line is always way too small for the fleet and always results in collisions. It's one of the permanent gripes about the way this race is organised. Another is the fact that despite entering online months in advance, you are obliged to go to LDYC to 'register' on the Saturday. In order to get access into LDYC, every occupant of the car has to pay R50 each so that the skipper can go and stand in a queue to sign on, after which you can drive away again R200 lighter for a car of four or two-thirds of the entry fee. That is a rip-off of note.

Anyway, the race itself is always very enjoyable except for those years (like in 2011) when the wind doesn't blow and the RTIR becomes a human braaivleis. Last year it took us five hours just to reach the island and like hundreds of other boats, we bailed and headed for home. I think there were about 23 finishers last year from three or four hundred starters.

Hopefully this year the wind will blow and we will complete the 30km course, finishing mid afternoon and starting the long cruise home again to pick up the mooring in the late afternoon feeling tired and satisfied. It's a 75km round trip for the day which, for most of us, is the longest distance we will cover in a day all year.

As with most sailing, it's all in the lap of the wind gods!

I am looking for a reliable sailboat to sail to the Indian ocean islands regularly. Must be fully equipped and comfortable for 5 people. Sails motor rigging etc in perfect condition; do not want to spend anything extra. At least 30ft. R100 000 - R300000.

Thanks

I would like to fit "Molly" with a Bimini. Texwise say the boom is too low & therfore they can not make up one. Is there a company in Pretoria or Johannesburg who would be able to help? or should I make my own?

Clive sails for Theta can be made by Rob of Supa Sail 011 465 8448...

We are not alone in the world it seems ....

By Airwaves Staff Writer Elizabeth
The J22 East Coast Championship was canceled in the early part of September. It had to be rescheduled for a later date due to a “lack of interest”. Four years ago, the J22 class, at least in the Annapolis area, was one of the strongest fleets. But just a few weeks ago, before a major event was to be held in Annapolis, only nine boats had registered, even with the deadline looming. However, this dropping off in numbers at regattas has not only been seen in the J22 fleet, but in one-design fleets around the country.
I am sure at some point in everyone’s sailing career, you have sailed an event and were disappointed by the attendance. Or you have participated in the phenomenon of: I’ll sail if everyone else does. But everyone else is thinking the same thing, no one signs up, and then no one sails. The more boats that sail a regatta the better the competition. The more boats that sail, the more fun everyone will have.....

Excellent article and I share your viewpoints. I am coming to take a look at a Holiday 23 this weekend at the Vaal (Anchor Creek). My wife and I have been dinghy sailing for about 5 years now and this will be our first keelboat. Like you I have spent most of our time cruising (we have a GP14 dinghy which is large enough for four adults) only putting in the occasional race. Honestly I don't really know what I'm getting into but its a leap of faith that I am prepared to take.

The DOLPHIN is an extremely modern design of a very fast cruiser/racer. It is a noticeably spacious yacht. A family of 4 can easily spend the night aboard without rearranging the cabin seating. A spacious toilet guarantees the privacy. The 12 HP diesel engine is more than adequate for this yacht which weighs less than 2 tons.

The yacht is especially designed to be built according to the Glass-fibre wood core construction or the diagonal round bilge wood epoxy method. In this way, and in not too long a time, you achieve a tremendously strong modern 26 footer capable of competing with every other yacht in its class.

If you plan to race, we then recommend the deep keel. As an extra to the building plans you can order millimetre-accurate frame drawings to full scale. This ensures that the building of this elegant, highly modern yacht is a guaranteed success.

Dolphin 26
Length over all	8.00 m
Length waterline	6.40 m
Beam	2.80 m
Draft	1.50 m
Draft	1.10 m
Displacement	1.80 t
Ballast 0.70 t
Sail area fractional rig	39.3 m²

My personal preference is a sealant called CT-1. Works well can be used an most materials, and can even be applied to wet surfaces. Manufacturer claims it can be used underwater, but haven't tested that claim yet.
